The buffer storage tank acts as heat storage. To this end, the heat generator heats up the heating water in a buffer storage tank, and the generated heat can be utilised at a later time.

Are buffer storage tanks sensible in conjunction with heat pumps?

Particularly in conjunction with a heat pump, a buffer storage tank offers an efficient option to provide warm water for the daily needs and to ensure individual rooms are heated properly. Often in such cases, heat pump storage tanks are used that include buffer storage tanks.
Additionally, the buffer storage tank has even more tasks in a system with a heat pump.  It extends the running times and, thus, ensures that the heat pump does not have to be started up as frequently. This reduces the wear of the system enormously. Moreover, blackout dates from the utility companies can be bridged by using a buffer storage tank, and the energy from the buffer storage tank can be utilised for the defrost process of the heat pump. A special advantage when combined with a heat pump is the possibility to cool with a buffer storage tank in hot spells.

What kind of application options does a buffer storage tank additionally provide?

Today, buffer storage tanks are applied with almost any heat generator fired with gas or oil, or also when integrating a wood-burning stove with buffer storage tank, a woodchip or pellet heating.
The utilisation of the buffer storage tank is particularly interesting together with several heat generators. By using several heat exchangers in one buffer storage tank, different heat generators can be used in parallel for the heating of water. Therefore it is very easy, for example, to integrate a solar system via an additional heat exchanger in order to support the system heating. Thus, the renewable proportion of heat generation can also be increased retroactively in older systems.

Are there different types of buffer storage tanks?

Basically, there are some differences based on the geometry of the buffer storage tanks.
